Training

Training sessions with your dog can be negotiated on an individual basis.  If you let me know what you are having trouble with,  I will undertake an assessment of your dog and advise whether I think I can help.  When you come to collect your dog, I will go over what training I have done, and show you how I have trained your dog including which commands etc I have used so you can follow through with the training at home.

Supervision and Monitoring

We live and work in a complex world where we are bombarded with information. It’s important to take time out consider how you might deal with things.

The ability to share the load and have protected time to discuss issues at work is now more important than ever. Supervision and mentoring for individuals are provided so the person can talk through the issues and look at ways of first understand them before resolving them. Hourly sessions of supervision and mentoring are available to individuals.

Additional Care

Additional walks and bathing etc can be negotiated at the time of booking and a pick-up service from Masterton may be available by negotiation for regular dogs.  We do not offer a grooming service, but for longer term stays, can arrange to drop off and pick up dogs at your nominated groomers within the wider Masterton area or accommodate a groomer here at the kennels.  I will be undertaking daily assessments of your dog and will reserve the right to have dogs groomed and/or nails clipped if matted coats or long nails start to become a welfare issue.  Please talk to me if your dog has health issues and we can decide together whether I can manage these health issues in your absence.

If you have other small animals that need looking after, I may also be able to assist/house them at the same time, this will be done by negotiation on a case-by-case basis.

Looking out for your pets health

The vet that we use for any dog health issues is Keinzley Agvet in Masterton and the dog food we use is a premium NZ made dry dog food called Ultra from Ultimate Feeds.  If you are only boarding your dog for a few days and/or if your dog requires a specialist diet, you will need to supply your own dog food.  For longer stays, I am happy to provide your dog with the complete and balanced Canine Ultra diet.

The important point is to be totally honest with me about your dog's likes/dislikes and any issues they may have so that their stay here is safe and enjoyable for both your dogs and those who will be caring for them. Please discuss any health issues your dog has and together we can decide whether I am able to manage their issues and any required medications.

Our Facility

I have designed a facility that only contains 12 kennels, with roomy inside and outside pens.  The 2 kennel buildings house 6 kennels and attached runs each and inside pens are climate controlled (especially important for coated or brachycephalic dog breeds and those dogs used to living in a house with heating/cooling).  Each inside pen is at least 1.5m by 1.5m with privacy screens between pens and a door to the outside run (again privacy screened between runs). There are two larger kennels with larger doors to accommodate large breed dogs or multiple family members. The larger kennels are approximately 2.2m x 1.5m inside, and 2.2m x 2m outside.

There are yards where dogs can do what dogs do, play, toilet or just lay in the sun/shade.  Each dog will have its own time out in the yards, but if you have more than one dog booked in, and they are happier being together, we can accommodate that too.  There is also a free run area that they can run and explore off lead.  We do not do doggy daycare; our focus is on the happiness and wellbeing of our boarders.

I have ensured that the boarding facility meets or exceeds the requirements set out in the Code of Welfare for Dogs and the Code of Welfare for Temporary Housing of Companion Animals (focusing on dogs).

About Paula

Wairarapa Boarding Kennels is a Wairarapa based boarding facility for dogs run by myself Paula Oakly (along with help from my family).   I started obedience training dogs at the age of 7 after seeing a couple training their German Shepherd Dogs behind my family home, they asked my mother if I could join the obedience club they were starting up, and the rest is history.

I am a life member of the Wairarapa Dog Training Club and a long term member of DogsNZ and have trained dogs in Obedience, RallyO, Agility, and Breed Showing.  Beginning with mix breed dogs then graduating to pedigree German Shepherd Dogs at the age of 18, I have had a lot of experience with different dog personalities, dog breeds, styles of learning and requirements around personal space for reactive dogs.

Over the years I have boarded various other dogs for people we know while they were unable to have their dogs for various reasons, some for several months.
